Technical data

In a spill-back atomizer only part of the fuel that is pumped to the nozzle leaves it as spray; the remainder returns to the tank through a spill-back line. Regulating that return flow changes the fuel output while the supply pressure stays essentially constant, which is what gives the wide turn-down of this family.

The spray pattern is adapted to the character of the combustion head, so the burner manufacturer gets the cone that the flame tube actually needs rather than a catalogue compromise. Three sizes are available: TYPE 9, TYPE 12 and TYPE 32, with or without a shut-off needle.

Technical data

  • Flow rate: 8 – 2250 kg/h
  • Turndown: 1:3 – 1:5
  • Spray angle: 30° – 35° – 45° – 50° – 60° – 70° – 80°
  • Shut-off needle: TYPE 9 without, TYPE 12 with or without, TYPE 32 with shut-off needle
  • Spray pattern: Adapted to the character of the combustion head

All figures are nominal reference values at 5 cSt fuel viscosity. Final dimensions are fixed together with the burner head and are confirmed on the order drawing.

Applications

Fields of application

  • Industrial and commercial oil burners with wide modulation bands
  • Bitumen, asphalt and process heaters where a stable spray over a large turn-down is required
  • Retrofits of TYPE 9, TYPE 12 and TYPE 32 burners with original Fluid Control Instruments Ltd drawings

Datasheets, drawings, output curves and manuals for this series are published in the documentation library.

Fluid Control Instruments Ltd manufactures to order and quotes per project: send burner head drawings, fuel specification and required flow range to receive a binding quotation.

Features

  • Flow rate 8 – 2250 kg/h across the three types
  • Spray angle 30° – 35° – 45° – 50° – 60° – 70° – 80°
  • Turndown 1:3 – 1:5
  • With or without shut-off needle depending on the type
  • Spray pattern adapted to the character of the combustion head
  • Standard Fluid Control Instruments Ltd quality: 100 % tested for flow rate, spray angle and spray pattern.

Frequently asked questions

Which flow rate range does this series cover?

The published range is 8 – 2250 kg/h. Because the atomizer is machined per order, intermediate values inside the range are available as well; send the required output at full load and at minimum load with the burner head drawing.

How large is the turn-down ratio, and how is it achieved?

The turn-down ratio is 1:3 – 1:5. The atomizer is dimensioned for the burner head, and the return-flow (spill-back) or atomizing-medium control keeps the spray pattern stable across the whole modulation band.

Do we need a shut-off needle, and what does it change?

This series is available without. A shut-off needle closes the nozzle orifice when the burner stops, so no fuel drips into the combustion chamber after shutdown; without it the burner head must provide the sealing function.

Which fuels can be atomized?

Light and heavy fuel oil are the standard duty, including used oil and vegetable oils where viscosity and contamination stay inside the agreed window. The internal geometry is chosen so that the flow rate depends as little as possible on oil temperature; always state density, viscosity and operating temperature when requesting a quotation.

What is the lead time and the minimum order quantity?

Atomizers are made to order; a typical lead time is about 42 days after drawing approval, and the minimum order quantity is 1 piece. Consumable items such as orifices, swirlers, discs and needles are normally available from stock.

Can this series replace the atomizer that is installed today?

Yes in most cases. Send the old order number, a photo of the burner head and the required output; we compare the spray angle, the pattern and the interface with the original Fluid Control Instruments Ltd drawing and confirm which type is interchangeable before the order is placed.
