Technical data
In an air or steam atomizer the fuel is broken up by a fast stream of compressed air or steam in addition to the fuel pressure. Because the atomizing energy does not come from the fuel pressure alone, the spray angle can be held constant while the fuel output is modulated over a very wide band.
The published turn-down is 1:5 – 1:10 at a constant spray angle, and the flow range runs from 2.5 to 5000 kg/h. The atomizer is supplied with or without a shut-off needle.
Technical data
- Flow rate: 2.5 – 5000 kg/h
- Turndown: 1:5 – 1:10 (constant spray angle)
- Spray angle: 20° – 120°
- Shut-off needle: Available with and without shut-off needle
- Atomizing medium: Compressed air or steam
All figures are nominal reference values at 5 cSt fuel viscosity. Final dimensions are fixed together with the burner head and are confirmed on the order drawing.
Applications
Fields of application
- Burners operating on heavy fuel oil or waste oil that need a very wide modulation band
- Furnaces and kilns with long residence time and tight emission limits
- Applications where compressed air or steam is available on site anyway
Datasheets, drawings, output curves and manuals for this series are published in the documentation library.
Fluid Control Instruments Ltd manufactures to order and quotes per project: send burner head drawings, fuel specification and required flow range to receive a binding quotation.

Frequently asked questions
Which flow rate range does this series cover?
The published range is 2.5 – 5000 kg/h. Because the atomizer is machined per order, intermediate values inside the range are available as well; send the required output at full load and at minimum load with the burner head drawing.
How large is the turn-down ratio, and how is it achieved?
The turn-down ratio is 1:5 – 1:10 (constant spray angle). The atomizer is dimensioned for the burner head, and the return-flow (spill-back) or atomizing-medium control keeps the spray pattern stable across the whole modulation band.
Do we need a shut-off needle, and what does it change?
This series is available without. A shut-off needle closes the nozzle orifice when the burner stops, so no fuel drips into the combustion chamber after shutdown; without it the burner head must provide the sealing function.
Which fuels can be atomized?
Light and heavy fuel oil are the standard duty, including used oil and vegetable oils where viscosity and contamination stay inside the agreed window. The internal geometry is chosen so that the flow rate depends as little as possible on oil temperature; always state density, viscosity and operating temperature when requesting a quotation.
What is the lead time and the minimum order quantity?
Atomizers are made to order; a typical lead time is about 42 days after drawing approval, and the minimum order quantity is 1 piece. Consumable items such as orifices, swirlers, discs and needles are normally available from stock.
Can this series replace the atomizer that is installed today?
Yes in most cases. Send the old order number, a photo of the burner head and the required output; we compare the spray angle, the pattern and the interface with the original Fluid Control Instruments Ltd drawing and confirm which type is interchangeable before the order is placed.
